Solar servicing and repairs

Solar is low maintenance, not no maintenance. Most systems will run for years without attention and then quietly lose a quarter of their output to something nobody noticed, because nothing about the house looks any different.

We check systems, find faults and repair them, whoever installed them.

01

What a service check covers

  1. Read the actual outputAgainst what the system should be producing for its size, orientation and the season, rather than against last month.
  2. Inspect the arrayPanel condition, mounting hardware, and anything that has grown into the shade line since it was installed.
  3. Check the electrical sideIsolators, DC connectors and cable condition, which is where age shows first and where safety issues live.
  4. Test the inverterError history as well as current state, because an inverter that is failing intermittently looks fine at the moment you visit.
  5. Report it plainlyWhat is wrong, what it costs to fix, and what can safely be left alone.

Most faults are under the panel rather than on it. A connector that has worked loose, or water where it should not be, and the array quietly makes less than it should.

Do panels need cleaning?

Less than people are told. Rain does most of it, and a modest layer of dust costs you very little output.

It matters where something is actually blocking the panel: bird droppings, leaf build-up under the array, or lichen at the panel edge. Under solar panels is a favourite nesting spot for birds and that does cause real losses.

Common questions

The ones that come up on nearly every first call, answered straight.

Not on the list? Call 1300 958 778 or send it through.

  1. How often should a system be checked?

Every couple of years is reasonable for a healthy system, and straight away if output has dropped or monitoring has stopped.

  2. Will you work on a system you did not install?

Yes. A lot of our service work is on systems whose original installer is no longer trading.

  3. My monitoring stopped working, is that serious?

Often it is just the wifi connection rather than the system. It is worth fixing either way, because monitoring is how you find out about a fault before a quarterly bill does.

  4. Can you repair a brand that has left Australia?

We can usually keep it running and can tell you honestly when parts are no longer obtainable and replacement is the better spend.

  5. Is a failed panel worth replacing?

Depends on the age and how many. One failed panel in a modern array is usually worth replacing. A widespread failure across an old system is normally the point to talk about renewing it.
